For all of those photographers out there, you know how hard it is to get a family portrait of your own family.

Everyone else's family? Piece of cake! But getting your own family together and finding someone

willing to take your portraits is another story!
We're lucky enough to have a family full of photographers. Our amazing-wonderful-talented cousin,

Betsey of Betsey Walton Photography, spent Thanksgiving with us and we traded roles for the afternoon

to get family portraits of each of our families.

They turned out perfect. Honestly, we didn't know we looked so good!

For those of you in the Redding area make sure to look her up!

We know how much you want to avoid the mall this Holiday Season.
So we made things a little easier for you. We gave Santa a call and he was so excited to come to our studio again this year!

He'll be here Friday, December 17th and Saturday, December 18th.

For those of you that want your own private session with Santa we'll be scheduling times just for you all day Friday, December 17th. And for those of you that want to drop by at your own convenience we'll have a set amount of time for you too! Drop by the studio any time between 10am-5pm Saturday, December 18th.

The cost for your session with Santa is just $25 and includes 1-5x7!
(We will have other print sizes and packages available for purchase. And since we print right away you'll even have them for Christmas gifts!)

So come in your Christmas best with your list in hand!

We loved being able to incorporate her passion for sports medicine at D.O. by taking her to the football field for some fun shots.

And for later she had some great accessories! We loved the scarves and earrings she brought!

This is what happens when you have the most perfect lighting, beautiful girl and amazing outfits.

We had all of that and more!

This is one beautiful girl who I'm pretty sure could pull off anything we threw at her.

We had a perfect session and we're so glad we were able to spend the afternoon with her! :-)

Cowpoke Fall Gathering 2010

This week is Cowpoke Fall Gathering
and has been declared Western Week here in Loomis!
Businesses were invited to decorate their store windows in true western fashion

along with the theme, Tough Enough to Wear Pink.

The first place winner would receive a basket including the grand prize,

a commercial on the country radio station 101.9 the WOLF!!

(valued at more than we would ever be able to afford)

Everyone in town competed and had amazing window displays. Some even had real live critters in their windows! We had a great time putting ours together with everything from a door off our own barn to my own saddle and tack. We included some of our western style portraits along with the old stuff from the barn. :-)

The judging took place this morning, and wouldn't you know it, WE WON!!

The founders of Cowpoke Fall Gathering came and surprised us with the first place winning basket!

We have so enjoyed being a part of this amazing event and are so grateful to the Brauns and Brenda Newsom!

And yes.... we ARE tough enough to wear pink! :-)

Family Portraits

We just love that Jerri planned this session with her mom and two brothers.

(A perfect example of a variation on a normal family session.

Not always including extended family adds variety and provides a different portrait to be passed down.)

Everything was perfect from what they wore to our lighting that day.

And even better than that was the personality that came along too!

I don't think we've laughed that hard during a session in a long time!

What to Wear {Fall Edition}

The question we get asked the most is
"What do we wear for our portrait session?"

Now as a reminder, before any session we have a consultation to discuss your family's style, the style of your home, and what you plan on doing with your portraits. We want to make sure your portraits will fit you. These are just suggestions to get the creative juices flowing!

So one of the first things we start with is a color scheme.

Depending on the time of year, what colors are in your home, and what you plan on doing with them will determine what colors we chose for you.

Right now the colors are really starting to pop outside and we love suggesting a theme that goes with the season. So to go along with the fall colors we chose shades of gray along with burnt orange and brown. I've put together two different schemes, one more formal and one a little more casual to give you ideas of how to work the color scheme into your style.

I'll say it once and I'll say it again, not everyone has to match perfectly, we just suggest you coordinate your colors and styles and yes, even patterns. Depending on your family and the setting you can even mix and match them.

Hopefully this helped give you some ideas and even some inspiration! :)

But alas, I am not Italian. So a simple smile and a sigh will have to do for now....

Jacob Raibley {Del Oro Senior 2011}

So any of you that know us very well at all know that we have a brother/son Jacob who is a Senior this year!

*gasp*
We know. We both just got gray hair. Just wait until you see his pictures. You'll have gray hair too!

So normally I get to tell you how much I have enjoyed getting to know our seniors and find out so many great things about them. Well, being Jacob's big sister I know him pretty well. I have been so blessed to be back in the area and see him through most of his high school experience. I can honestly say he is the best young man I know. He has grown into someone I am proud to be not only related to, but also friends with. He is trustworthy, faithful, hilarious, and of course handsome! Looking through his pictures I am reminded of when he was little and how much I used to torture him and of course he just put up with it. Now he's all grown up and turned into an amazing person, despite our relentless picking.

We really are proud of you Jacob and are so proud of who you are and who you will become.

Our lovely neighbors G'Day Donuts has recently expanded to now be G'Day Donuts, Dogs and More.

And you know what? Today they are having a HUGE celebration from 10-6!

Wine Weekend at Villa Fiorente

Some of our closest friends, Mike and Lisa Duarte own and operate their small family winery, Duarte Family Vineyards. Their amazing wines, Popie Wines, are now being poured in Auburn at an amazing location, Villa Fiorente, along with three other wineries. This breathtaking location offers a unique experience with four very different wineries.

They are having a special sneak peek weekend this Saturday and Sunday. They will be serving mini lamb kabobs made with Sinclair Family Farm's grass fed lamb, herb roasted red potatoes, and of course lots of great wines to sample! For ONLY $5!

Sweet baby Hannah

I really have the most gorgeous family.

This is my beautiful cousin Terah and her amazing husband Dayne.

Oh, and of course their sweet baby girl Hannah!

They are so very happy with their new addition. And oh do they love her! I don't know that this little girl will ever be put down. Between her very loving mother and incredibly protective and caring father, her Grandparents and Aunties, she's going to get more lovin' than she'll ever know what to do with!

And I think everyone will be ok with that! ;)

We had the pleasure of taking Miss Amy's pictures! Kind of an 8th grade milestone session. We visited the property of a long time family friend of theirs and were lucky enough to catch everything in bloom.

We had such a great afternoon with her and her mom. We had to keep reminding ourselves that she's only graduating 8th grade! She is one of the sweetest most polite girls we've ever had! And on top of all that just beautiful!

We have a gorgeous frame line. I just love everything they have.

The frame and mat combinations are endless and they have everything for anyone's home.

The best part? When you take it home all you need to do is put a nail in the wall!

I know I'm not alone when I say we're busy.

Busy with the loveliness and chaos here and of course at home.

(And we wouldn't have it any other way!)

So I'm slightly delayed in keeping this updated, but hopefully this beautiful little blog number will forgive me.

When these two girls came in for their consultation they were quiet, timid, and wearing jeans, sweatshirts with their hair in poneytails. Very pretty girls, yes. But We had no idea what incredible beauty was underneath! You know that natural beauty that is just breath taking? These two sisters have it. And just in case that wasn't enough, their expertly picked white cotton dresses, flowers picked from their grandmothers garden and a perfect spring day should do it.

Lacy {Senior 2010}

This has been a year with some seriously amazing gals!

We met Lacy and she had the greatest idea of taking pictures with her horse she's had all her life. So we headed out to Camp Far West and met her at her beautiful home and enjoyed all the great spots she had on her property! And of course we got some great pictures with her horse! :)

And you know what really makes us love it even more?

When they have something they are truly passionate about and they don't mind sharing that passion with us.

This is Charlie. He lives to race.

Rarely do we get to see someone so young with so much passion and drive.

Oh and in case he wasn't already cool enough for you, he also plays bass for his church band.

LOVE this girl! I knew she would be a blast when she loved my idea of her pink sparkle mini prom dress on the tracks. Contrast that with her knee high boots, off the shoulder top with a leather vest and you have perfection! She was so much fun to photograph and had some amazing looks. They really truly love each other and enjoy being with each other.

It's rare to find a brother and sister that really love each other like this.

They invited us to their beautiful home and we could have spent all day there following them around taking pictures.

We have fans. It's true. And they love us. And know us well enough to get us fruit.
I mean, what's not to love about a bouquet of fruit!

I'm pretty sure chocolate covered granny smith apples are my new favorite thing.

We also received some very beautiful red tulips. They are now soaking up lovely
(and much awaited) sunshine in our lobby! :)

(And no, these are not from our husbands. I know that's what you were thinking. Oh, and please excuse the over-excited face. I haven't seen strawberries that yummy looking in MONTHS. And yes, it was a coincidence that we are both wearing red. We tend to accidentally match more frequently than we'd like.)

So Happy Valentine's Day to you all! Go give someone a hug and tell them how much you love them.

It really has been so much fun to capture these two during their first year!

It's been brought to my attention that I have neglected our little blog. I'm sorry.

But we're back, and I won't let it happen again! December was crazy, and for any of you that came by the studio I know you can vouch for that! Here is a little tiny sliver of a glimpse of what's been going on here at Simply Portraits while the blog took a little vacation.

And of course, SANTA came!

For those of you that have asked, I've already talked to Santa and he said he would be able to come back the same weekend this year! So mark your calendars, he'll be here and he's bringing Mrs Clause too!

Yes, we dressed up like elves and helpers. (But clearly not everyone was as cool as Kara, Carlene and myself) And yes, I included my own "child" even though he didn't get to "see" Santa. He still needed his Christmas picture taken!

Overall 2009 was an AMAZING year! It would not have been the same without YOU! So thank you for being a part of our 2009 and we can't wait to see what 2010 has in store for us!

We know how much you want to avoid the mall this Holiday Season.

So we made things a little easier for you. We gave Santa a call and he kindly agreed to come by our studio!

He'll be here Friday, December 18th and Saturday, December 19th.

For those of you that want your own private session with Santa we'll be scheduling times just for you from 9am-Noon. And for those of you that want to drop by at your own convenience we'll have a set amount of time for you too! Drop by the studio any time between 1pm-5pm. The cost for your session with Santa is just $20 and includes 1-5x7!

(We will have other print sizes and packages available for purchase)

So come in your Christmas best with your list in hand!

We will also be collecting toys for the Loomis Basin Toy Drive and donating a portion of all proceeds to the Toy Drive.

Happy Autumn!! It is finally staring to feel like fall here in Loomis. I know you are just dying to find something to do on this crisp autumn weekend and I have JUST the thing for you!

The Loomis Eggplant Festival!

Loomis is such an amazing community full of history and rich culture. There are so many wonderful reasons why you should come this Saturday, October 3rd to the Eggplant Festival. I even made you a nice little list with the:

The leaves have the first hint gold and red across from our studio in front of Horseshoe Bar Grill. It's cool enough to wear a sweatshirt in the evening and I can finally pull my down blanket up to my chin at night.
Pumpkin spice lattes are back at Starbucks.
Mmmm..... fall is in the air!

(Besides my favorite season being almost here?!)

Family Portraits are in full swing!!!

You know Aunt Judy and Grandma want a new portrait for their walls. And I know that fireplace really needs a new canvas over it, why not make that a Christmas gift to your own family?

Labor day

This weekend we continued on our cottage project by learning how to tile. The entire house. If you ever ever need to learn anything about tiling go visit Skip at Home Depot. He was amazing and even held a special class just for us. We are now totally ready to start tiling next weekend after finishing the rest of the prep work this weekend. It will be a huge project but thanks to Skip we're feeling very prepared. But still a little scared. We may be smiling but on the inside we're asking what we've gotten ourselves into.

I don't know how I almost forgot to post these! I know you probably recognize sweet Lizzie from one of our favorite pictures on our couch. She's a big sister now! Lizzie is taking her new role very seriously and is just loving it. She's been back twice with her new baby sister and we've loved having her here.

Just wait until you see the baby announcements for this little pipsqueak!! I'll give her mama a chance to mail them out then I'll post them for you to see! She is just too precious for words!

You might recognize Kelsey in our next two pictures. She was one of our lovely 2009 seniors and we were so excited when she came back with her mom and sister for family portraits. They were all so sweet and close and so very beautiful. There is something so special about a mother and her daughters. We felt so privileged to photograph these lovely ladies.

They even loved our crazy idea of getting in the boat! They turned out so cute and we all had fun taking these pictures!

Fishing, fires, floors.... and grapes?

Last week I decided to start sharing our weekends with you and all that goes on around here. You can get to know us and we can get to know you! As some of you may know, when you have a big family your weekend gets split up between family members. Our weekend was very split.

Part 1:

The youngest Raibley kiddo, Adam, was invited to go fishing with our good family friend, Todd. Todd is an excellent fisherman and invited Adam to go with him to "Take a kid fishing" tournament.

And who might you ask won the tournament?

Adam did. :)

He is sooooo excited.

Besides catching the 2.6lb fish he also caught a plaque! (now hanging above his bed) He also won a fishing pole, tackle box, and an assortment of bait and other fishing gear. Such a fun experience for him and great bonding time with Todd.

Part 2:

Grape picking! Our good family friends, the Duartes, have a family owned vineyard and every year a group of friends and family get together to help pick grapes. For me it feels like the beginning of fall. Even if it was 105 the day before, as soon as we start cutting grapes it feels like fall. (And if anyone has known me for any length of time, you'll know that fall is by far my favorite season.)

Part 3:

Another part about fall is Kara returning to college. By far one of my least favorite parts of fall. The only other unfortunate part about this time of year are the wildfires here in California. Sadly on their roadtrip they witnessed one first hand. They make for devastatingly beautiful photos.

Part 4:

The floors. The dreaded floors. As you saw last week we were finally able to paint the cottage. Well, in order to seal the concrete floor, it had to be sanded down. It was very messy and not at all picture worthy. But those boys worked in 105 degree heat and got (nearly) every speck of paint and plaster off those floors.

Phew! That wraps up our weekend! Hope you all had a great one too!

So I'm going to take a quick break from photo updates to tell you about an amazing friend of mine. Some of you know when Jay and I lived in Arkansas one of his best friends/roommate/coworker Brent was in a horrific dirtbike accident while they were out on a normal weekend ride.

His injuries should have killed him, but God had other plans in mind for him.

It's been over a year and a half and he has made

some AMAZING accomplishments.

His most recent video shows him crushing his past walking record.

We started it when he was in his coma and now he updates it with stories from rehab. He's not only an amazing friend, but truly an inspiration.

I could go on for hours about Brent's story and how amazing he is, but I'll let you find out for yourself. Just do a little reading and you'll probably come to love him just as much as the rest of us.

We've known her for a few years and it has been so special to see this girl grow into such an amazing person. We knew she would be so easy to photograph and her pictures would be stunning, but we had no idea how much fun we would have! Here are just a few of our favorite pictures from our shoot.

How was your weekend?

Remember in elementary school the teacher would go around the room and ask each of us to share what we did over the weekend? We even did it in high school. It was my favorite part of Monday. (Ok, so maybe it was the only good thing about Monday) I loved listening to what other people did, and it was always a way for me to briefly replay my weekend in my mind.

So, I thought on Mondays maybe I should share a little bit of our weekend with you. Some weekends we may be assisting our cousin Betsey in two back-to-back weddings, and others we may just sit on the porch with a glass of lemonade. Either way, you'll get to know us a little better! And maybe you can share your weekends with us!

No, it's not Monday, I'm fully aware that it's Tuesday. But after hearing what our weekend was like, I think you may forgive me. As some of you may know we are renovating a building at the Raibley home to be a brand new in-law quarters or guest house. And by renovating, I mean gutting and starting over from the studs, and in some areas even removing the studs. It's been quite the project. Well, the walls are up, the texture is done, and we were finally able to paint! Our good friend Ally even came up for the weekend to lend a helping hand. So with rollers in hand we attacked the cottage and finished all priming and color coats by Saturday night!

The cherry on top of the weekend was our amazing Aunt Becky popping in for a visit. Her and Mom hit every antique shop from Auburn to Roseville. (We have some awesome new props you'll see featured soon.) They also saw Julie and Julia and said it was a must see.

Needless to say, we had a very busy house over the weekend! We are so blessed to have such amazing family and friends.

*Are you wondering what the paint is doing on dear old dad's face? And J & J's for that matter? These boys are so smart they decided to use the paint sprayer to spray the primer and then the ceiling paint. (Which made for a very speedy job) What they didn't account for was the spray back. I'm just glad they all wore masks.

**And I would like to clarify that my entire home is not green. Just the bedroom. And kitchen. Don't judge me, it's my favorite color! And if the green on your screen looks minty, it's just your screen. It is definitely sage (or Spanish Moss, according to the can) but not mint.

4th of July Weekend

I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July weekend! We had such an amazing Saturday full of grilling, visiting, baby holding, and of course, lots of eating! We were even able to celebrate a 60th wedding anniversary! I love to see how much they still adore each other after all these years. Sunday we had a wedding shower for our sweet cousin Andrea and her fiance, Blake. (We even took some engagement pictures! I'll post those later. They are sooooo good!) Fireworks, food, family.. and thanksgiving

First of all, we wanted to let you know we'll be out of town this weekend to spend 4th of July with family and friends. Hopefully you'll be doing the same! We get together with our Raibley side of the family every summer, and we have so many things to celebrate this year! Two brand new babies, a 60th wedding anniversary, weddings and engagements that bring new faces into the family. We are so blessed and have so many things to celebrate and be thankful for. Not only the independence and freedom of our great nation but for what that independence and freedom give us each day. I am so grateful that we live in a nation where a mother and daughter can not only become photographers, but open their own studio. Even today there are so many countries where people are not only deprived of the right to choose their own career path, but be able to do so in the technological world that we live in today. In economic times like this it can be hard to remember to be thankful for the country that might not be on our good side. We know it will pass, but in the meantime it can be hard to be grateful. I know, it's not Thanksgiving, you'll get that rant in November, but for now just remember to be thankful for the country that we live in, the people we're surrounded by, and the God-given freedom not everyone is privileged to the way we are. (:

Sweet simplicity

I love it when we have seniors that don't mind kicking off their shoes and really relaxing in front of the camera. When Sarah walked in with her white dress and bouquet of flowers, I knew she would be just fine. I loved so many of her pictures, but this one just makes me want to grab a bunch of flowers and spin in circles in the pasture too. Doesn't it? So sweet and simple.

So here's another senior we are so glad we met. His mom warned us he wasn't too keen on the whole "senior portrait" thing. That's ok, we get a few people who aren't always into taking pictures. We just try to keep things quick, simple and pain free. Trevor shows up and is a little shy at first but it didn't take long at all for him to warm up in front of the camera. What started out as a senior I thought wouldn't enjoy his senior sitting, we ended up with a senior who had a great time and should (seriously) consider modeling. Not only does he have a great sense of style and is very comfortable with himself, but he also has an amazing smile to go with all that.

Baby Benjamin

I can't believe this boy is ONE already! It feels like we did his newborn pictures just yesterday! He has changed so much and has become one of the sweetest little boys I know. He even fell and bumped his lip, (at the studio right before we started pictures... go figure) but still continued to play and smile. There is no limit to his smile and sweet hugs.

Fresh look for summer

It's so hot outside we needed a fresh, clean, cool, simple look for the blog. I hope you like it! Now go cool down with an iced coffee! That's what I'll be doing!

A wee bit behind...

I don't think I've ever felt so out of touch! We've been so busy here it's been hard to keep up with this! We've had so many wonderful sittings and have had some wonderful things going on here, but I just haven't had 5 spare minutes to tell anyone about it!

May wrapped up with seniors and babies, and June started with grad nights, graduations, and everything in between!

As the summer starts full swing (and far too hot for my liking!) I'll try to do a better job keeping this updated. I'll also throw in some "recent" sittings that I neglected to post.

I hope everyone is enjoying the beginning of their summer! I know I'll be beating the heat with a boba tea and photoshop! :)
